These notes on Jemez Mountains fishing are excerpted from the Friends of Fenton Lake articles that appear in the After the Thunder newspaper published in Jemez Springs. They provide a window into Jemez fishing as a function of time and are reported twice a month.
Winter fishing in the lower Jemez River continues to be good for stocked rainbow trout. Stocking occurs roughly every 2 weeks. Fishing pressure is high in the first week after a stocking, but some fish always remain in the river, they are just more challenging to catch! The week ending 1/17 the Jemez River received 1,500 stocked Triploid Rainbow trout, and Fenton Lake also got 1500 fish. Ice fishing at Fenton Lake began the last week in January with many fish caught. The warm weather this coming week (startiong 2/1) is a concern as noted above. Jemez River flows have averaged just under 20 cfs with peaks to 25 cfs and lows to 17 cfs. These are decent flows for fishing in the Jemez Springs Village or at The Bluffs and San Diego Fishing Access sites on NM 4. Stealth is often the key to finding fish in this clear water that sees many other fishers.
The warm up this week may open up wild brown trout opportunities in the lower elevation streams in the Jemez. The lower Rio San Antonio and upper Jemez River are accessible at this time of year – be careful of ice and snow at the rivers’ edge. Happy February and tight lines.
