These notes on Jemez Mountains fishing are excerpted from the Friends of Fenton Lake articles that appear in the After the Thunder newspaper published in Jemez Springs. They provide a window into Jemez fishing as a function of time and are reported twice a month.
Winter fishing in the lower Jemez River continues to be good for stocked rainbow trout. Stocking occurs roughly every 2 - 3 weeks. Fishing pressure can be high in the first week after a stocking, but some fish always remain in the river. The Jemez River and Fenton Lake are due for a stocking – the last was on 12/27. Stocking dates can be found at jemezcentral.com and the NMDGF website. Jemez River flows have have been a bit low due to lack of precipitation, ranging from 11 to 21 cfs. Jemez streams north of NM 126 are starting to ice up, making fishing for wild brown trout tough and a bit dangerous - be careful.
