Jemez Adventures Short Fishing Notes – December 28, 2024

These notes on Jemez Mountains fishing are excerpted from the Friends of Fenton Lake articles that appear in the After the Thunder newspaper published in Jemez Springs. They provide a window into Jemez fishing as a function of time and are reported twice a month.

Winter fishing in the lower Jemez River has been good for stocked rainbow trout. Stocking occurs roughly every 2 weeks. Fishing pressure is high in the first week after a stocking, but some fish always remain in the river, they are just more challenging to catch! The week ending 12/27 the Jemez River received 1,000 fish and Fenton Lake got 870. Recent warm weather has left open water at the lake so there should be some decent lake fishing in the next week or so before the transition to ice fishing. Jemez River flows have been stable, ranging from 16 to 24 cfs – good fishing flows. The water in the Village and downstream is crystal clear and the fish can be in a spooky mood, so make longer casts when possible, approach the water quietly, and be aware of your shadow
