Jemez Adventures Short Fishing Notes – December 15, 2024

These notes on Jemez Mountains fishing are excerpted from the Friends of Fenton Lake articles that appear in the After the Thunder newspaper published in Jemez Springs. They provide a window into Jemez fishing as a function of time and are reported twice a month.

What great winter weather for fishing! Soon snow and ice will make if difficult to access the upper elevation waters – some have ice edges already. The lower Jemez River Fishing Access Sites (San Diego and The Bluffs) and the Village of Jemez Springs (about ¼ mile up and down-stream from Mooney Bridge) water were stocked in the week ending December 13, amounts were not published as of this writing. Fish were caught Thursday and Friday, with deep nymphs and wooly buggers on both sides of the bridge. Fishing seems best from 9-10 AM to 3-4 PM. Jemez River flows have dropped a bit to a daily low of 16 cfs and a daily high of 24. As a result fish are often found in deeper water. The water in the Village is crystal clear, and combined with slightly lower flows has the fish in a spooky mood – be stealthy!
