These notes on Jemez Mountains fishing are excerpted from the Friends of Fenton Lake articles that appear in the After the Thunder newspaper published in Jemez Springs. They provide a window into Jemez fishing as a function of time and are reported twice a month.
Fenton Lake was stocked with 270 Rio Grande Cutthroat the week of August 30. The Cebolla River in the Park was stocked with 637 Triploid Rainbows. As weather cools the lake stocking rate will increase, and fishing will pick up dramatically by fall. Jemez streams are seasonably low but recent rains have brought the Jemez River flow rates back to just under 20 cfs (cubic feet per second) from their low in mid-August of 10 cfs. The gage is located near the Jemez Pueblo, so it includes water from the Guadalupe drainage as well. Wild brown trout activity will continue to get better as fall approaches. September is a great time to fish for Rio Grande Cutthroats in the high country – the weather is cool for good hiking and the fish are starting to eat to get ready for winter.
