These notes on Jemez Mountains fishing are excerpted from the Friends of Fenton Lake articles that appear in the After the Thunder newspaper published in Jemez Springs. They provide a window into Jemez fishing as a function of time and are reported twice a month.
NMDGF stocking of Fenton Lake has been suspended for warm temperatures and is expected to resume in early fall. The Rio Cebolla, one of the coldest streams in the southern Jemez, was stocked on July 16 and August 1. The brood (Kid’s) pond has not been stocked since June 27. Wild fish are active with browns munching grasshoppers and caddisflies. Please be careful releasing fish in hot weather, and if the water temperature is above 65 F quit fishing and come back in the morning. If you have been thinking about a cutthroat trip now is the time – the higher elevations in the San Pedro Parks and the northern Jemez still have cold water and the cutthroat should be actively fattening up for winter.
