These notes on Jemez Mountains fishing are excerpted from the Friends of Fenton Lake articles that appear in the After the Thunder newspaper published in Jemez Springs. They provide a window into Jemez fishing as a function of time and are reported twice a month.
NMDGF spring stocking of Fenton Lake and local streams continues. The June 7 stocking of rainbow trout included Fenton Lake with 650 fish stocked, the Cebolla with 651. The May 22 stocking for Fenton Lake was 341, the Cebolla 340, and the Seven Springs Brood Pond (often called the Kid Pond, fishers must be under 12 years of age) with 899 fish. None of our local sites were in the June 14 NMDGF stockings – this is normal in June as the weather warms. The lake and the Rio Cebolla do get stocked later in summer than most, but most streams won’t be stocked again until fall.
Our local steams are back to normal flows and the San Antonio, Rio de Las Vacas, East Fork Jemez, and Guadalupe rivers should all be in top fishing condition through mid-July for wild brown trout – particularly if we get a good monsoon season. This is the time for dry flies on all our streams. Good luck!
